On-the-Go Extensions

(L) Hair after hiking; (R) With Dark Blonde Secret Extensions

Up until my 20s, I got natural blonde highlights from the sun. But as I’ve gotten older and started paying attention to every freckle, sunblock and hats have become a regular thing. Goodbye natural blonde halo.

Now my hair is bronde – or as Mom used to call it, “Mousy Brown. If I have any highlights, they’re usually paid for. Up until a few weeks ago, my hair has always been a few inches below my shoulders. When it gets any longer, it gets stringy.

Mom has wanted me to get extensions for decades. Meh. I’ve got other things to spend a paycheck on. But when Secret Extensions reached out, I decided I had nothing to lose.

Plus I like the idea of not having to clip hair in. The idea of exposed clips or seams has always made me anxious. Secret Extensions are worn like an adjustable headband. They can be taken on and off in seconds. You just slip them on over your head and pull your natural hair out over the thin band. Instant on-the-go length and volume!

I wore the extensions out a few times and no one noticed anything, which was good. I loved the added volume and color gradient – but the length (16”) and curled ends honestly felt a bit too Disney Princess. If I wear them again, I will attempt cutting the length first.

Actress and company spokeswoman Daisy Fuentes says you can cut, style, or wash these just as you would your own hair. There are 11 shades to pick from, and they’re really affordable compared to professional applications.

The Secret Extensions are also perfect for trying out highlights, low lights, or even ombre and balayage looks – before committing to permanent color. I test drove Dark Blonde and Light Brown (swatched above).

And the Winner is…

Special thanks to all the readers who shared Flip video camera-less moments!

From the regretful mother who missed capturing her toddler’s very first sarcastic comment on film (shame!), to the guy who wished he had a Flip cam in-hand to proove his mother actually fainted during his engagement announcement (classic!) – we were thrilled to reward our favorites with a brand new Flip video camera.

Of all the entries, the following story out of downtown Los Angeles felt most share-worthy…

“Recently my mother was given a short-time to live. Our family has since taken every opportunity to spend with her. Last weekend, we took the grandchildren and mom up to the Disney center for a picnic. The kids packed the picnic basket with all their favorites – Oreos and Juice Boxes and Bologna. It was a perfect day, a guy was sitting standing on the stairs playing his sax, the kids were running around the tress on the patio, tourists were walking back and forth. In that moment, I had wished I could have stopped time and sat inside that happiness forever. I wasnt armed with a camera and regret it to this day.

Best Wishes, Danielle C.”

Danielle received a personalized Flip Video camera – plus a VIP box of the latest beauty products – compliments of L’Oreal Paris.

City of Gloss Angeles is Born!

2 Jun

This blog is hereby born from a genuine love of Los Angeles – the freedom of her style, the spirit of her canyons and the promise of her residing influencers. Living in this City of Angels, we often dine next to the affluent, famous, overexposed and overeager – but we also walk amongst the unsung volunteers, organic farmers, heroic teachers and healers.

The truth is most characters depicted in tabloids and reality shows are usually just that: characters. Whereas the glam of entertainment is a huge part of our city’s culture (yes it exists!), it is only a morsel of who we are.  In fact, though I don’t have any stats to prove it, I’d bet good money that the majority of stereotypical-Hollywood are transplants.  Continue reading
