10 Things I Know

17 Sep

Beauty bloggers are often asked about our favorite products, tips & tricks. Makes sense. We get a lot of intel. But truth be told, a product has to be really great in order to stand out amongst the slew of competition. Especially skincare. No matter what it says on the box or in the commercial, you don’t generally see results (if you see them at all) until at least a month of consistent use. Which is where the blogger issue can come into play. When testing out so many formulas, it’s rare we have flexibility to use only one product at a time, as directed. Keep this in mind when reading beauty blog reviews.

Makeup, fragrance, hair tools, and bath products are a whole different ball game. One and done. You can tell in seconds if they’re a keeper.

So having stated all of the above, I do have some beauty product-related knowledge. Whatever isn’t news to you, just chalk up as a reminder. Here are 11 things I know for sure…

  1. Lips will never look better chapped. Dry lips don’t look healthy. Grab a natural lip scrub, leave it on for 5 minutes. Massage in circles before rinsing off. Then follow it up with a rich lip balm or treatment. I love the Whipped Cherry Fruit Scrub and Agave Lip Mask from BITE Beauty.

Screen Shot 2018-09-16 at 3.53.22 PMIf you really are anti-scrub, try this: Smile with your lips together, then place tape over them. Smooth the tape over your lips for a minute or so. Then rip it off. Once you see what’s on the tape, you might want to grab that scrub!

2. Before you hop on the lip filler bandwagon, try a plumping gloss. I’m partial to Buxom’s Full-On Plumping Polish or Cream but almost every brand makes one now. The good ones really work and make your lips fuller and smoother with continued use. If you’re looking to rectify lip lines, hold off on injections until you try products like Dr. Macrene’s 37 Actives High Performance Anti-Aging and Filler Lip Treatment, Embryolisse’s Re-Densifying Eye & Lip Contour Cream, or Meaningful Beauty’s Remodeling Lip Serum.

Screen Shot 2018-09-16 at 4.16.02 PM3. If you want to combat under eye puffiness, stick to serum. Creams can work for dark circles, but if you really want to dilute those bags, you only stand a chance with a serum like SkinMedica’s Uplifting Eye Serum or the Ferulic + Retinol Triple Correction Eye Serum by Dr. Dennis Gross. Ice cubes don’t hurt either.

4. Also for those battling eye puffiness (as I clearly am) or discoloration, I’ve tried all the methods of concealer. Hands down, the upside down triangle trick works best. Message me or google it if you aren’t familiar, but it basically consists of using your concealer to draw an upside down triangle beneath your eye – filling it in, then blending it into your skin and additional face make as needed. Trust me, it works far better than the other hacks you’ll hear about. New must-try fave: Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Away Concealer!

5. Floss. Just do it. I never used to. But in an age of kale, seaweed salad, and celery sandwiches – using dental floss is necessary. I always feel a sense of accomplishment getting that celery string out, too. It’s the little things in life… amiright?

Screen Shot 2018-09-16 at 5.28.55 PM

6. For any of us who over-plucked in the 90s or weren’t blessed with long luscious lashes, there are products out there that work. You can definitely grow longer eyelashes and fuller eyebrows with OTC products. GradeLash is really popular lately, but NeuBrow and NeuLash have consistently worked wonders for both my lashes and sparse brow zones.

Screen Shot 2018-09-16 at 8.18.51 PM7. Matte works better on youth. It just does. Matte lipstick. Matte foundation. Matte powder. All of it. As much as I’d love to pull off a deep red matte lip, it just makes me look older than I am. Same with face makeup. If you must go with a matte foundation, try adding a dewy highlighter or pearly sheen to your cheekbones. And on that note, glitter is generally for youth, too. If you want some sparkle, go for a finely milled shimmer, pearlized or holographic sheen. Think Hourglass vs. Stila.

8. Play with primers. They make a difference. I love Urban Decay eye primers. As for foundation primers, try one from your favorite brand of foundation. Let it set for a minute or two before applying makeup. Your lids and face will become a much smoother canvas. They also help keep makeup on longer.

Screen Shot 2018-09-16 at 9.43.55 PM9. You know you need to wear SPF (natural is better) and to wash your face every night. Skincare 101. And I won’t bore you with my favorite cleansers or makeup removers. But I will say that Micellar waters are effective. I’m always surprised how much makeup didn’t come off from washing alone. After you wash and pat dry your face, saturate a cotton round with Micellar water (I like IT Cosmetics Miracle Water 3-in-1 Tonic) and swipe it over your skin. You’ll see what washing left behind.

10. Do you still get those awful cystic chin pimples? I do. And my instinct has always been to douse them in hot water or hit a steam room when I can. Wrong. Turns out heat only exacerbates already-irritated skin. Leave the pimple alone. Do not try to pop it. If you absolutely have to do something, dab it with cool water or a covered ice cube to help decrease swelling.

Well those are my top 10. Let me know if they helped at all. Or if you have any specific questions, send ’em my way. Maybe I know more than 10 things. ; )

Tatcha Labor Day Sale!

31 Aug

As with the long Labor Day weekend comes the sales. And as much as I’d like to stand on my high horse about how these types of weekends aren’t about consumerism, I won’t. Mainly because it’d be hypocritical. I LOVE a great sale!

So I’m sharing a brand with you that rarely goes on sale – and that’ll be that.

Tatcha. Love this skincare brand! If you don’t know it and dream of “geisha pure skin,” check it out on Tatcha.com or at Sephora. Personally, I can’t get enough of their tinted illuminating eye treatment for masking tired eyes.

Tatcha has taken some of their most popular products and is offering them in 3 complementing duos at big price reductions on their websiteAugust 30th thru September 2nd. See below!

Mother’s Day Gifts You Can Order Today

8 May

Well hello! It’s been a minute. My apologies. The days (ok, weeks) have gotten away from me. But, as I’m sure someone still says: Better late than never.  So just in time for you last minute shoppers, here are a few fun suggestions for Mom’s big day.

2018 MOTHER’S DAY GIFT GUIDE

Screen Shot 2018-05-07 at 11.56.09 PMLUXE SKINCARE: Send an at-home version of Kate Somerville’s celebrated Melrose Place clinic. Advanced age-defying formulas and curated kits for every skin-type are available, but I recommend the special Every Day Warrior box for Mom. It features Kate’s coveted Wrinkle Warrior 2-in-1 Moisturizer+Serum, Eye Gel, NEW Cold Cream Cleanser+Makeup Remover, and exclusive wash cloth—all wrapped in a beautiful blue box.

ACCESSORIES @ POTTERY BARN:

Screen Shot 2018-05-08 at 12.13.50 AMThe McKenna collection of leather jewelry cases at Pottery Barn is wonderful. Beautiful pastels lined in ultra-suede with special compartments, so delicate pieces don’t get tangled. My personal favorite is the McKenna Jewelry Binder. Perfect for the woman who travels often.

Screen Shot 2018-05-08 at 12.24.19 AMMake her mornings easier with the smart simulations of the Simplehuman wide-view sensor mirror. Any woman who knows the frustration of putting on makeup only to get outside and see a clown in the mirror, will fall in love with this ultra-luxe beauty tool. It’s a special must-have for Mom’s vanity. It mimics natural sunlight, and even has a motion sensor that turns on when she approaches.  It’s also got different magnifications—optimal for tweezing and using liquid liner.

NEW MAKEUP:

Screen Shot 2018-05-08 at 12.47.42 AMAnd what goes better with a makeup mirror than a perfect new lip color? There are so many great formulas out right now, so pick out one that she might not have tried yet. I fall for every collection Pat McGrath touches. So when she finally launched her own line in Sephora, I was all over it. And it doesn’t disappoint. There are so many rich wearable shades–Modern Woman MatteTrance Lipstick is my latest go-to cool mauve.

Screen Shot 2018-05-08 at 12.58.56 AM

If Mom prefers an all-natural formula, check out the latest from Tarte Cosmetics. Their Color Splash Lipstick from the Rainforest of the Sea Collection wears really well. Griege, Salt Lyfe, Set Sail... So many moisturizing satin, full coverage options. All in beautiful sea-blue swirled tubes.

HER PERFECT PAIR:

Screen Shot 2018-05-08 at 10.04.59 AMWhen your feet feel good, you feel good. Who knows this better than Mom? Send her the ultimate gift card: customized shoes. From narrow to extra-wide, sizes 2-15, Shoes of Prey will create the shoe of her fashion dreams. Sneakers, boots, strappy stilettos—she can choose her fabric, lining, color, heel, everything. Or she can opt for a pre-designed style. Whatever she creates will arrive at her door in less than two weeks.

BONUS: Designing her custom shoe is a fun project you can do together.

TIME FOR HERSELF:

Screen Shot 2018-05-08 at 10.39.51 AMI always love a gift card to a local day spa. It might not feel that creative, but she’ll thank you after an afternoon of self-care. If she doesn’t appreciate a massage, remind her about facials, scrubs, relaxing tea, blow outs, manicures, et al. Most good day spas have a laundry list of services.

I’ll go into more detail in another post about the Osmosis Day Spa Sanctuary in California, but if Mom happens to be around the Sonoma area, I highly recommend treating her to a day here.

Holiday Gift Guide | No. 3

17 Dec

Now that we’re in the thick of the holidays, I present you with my third Holiday Gift Guide – and very last one for 2017. What follows is a list of gift ideas that work best for those you know well. I’ve sprinkled a few fragrance suggestions that can also serve as hostess gifts… but for the most part, these aren’t for your favorite FedEx carrier.

BEAUTY TOOLS

Screen Shot 2017-11-28 at 4.28.10 PMPersonal Microderm Pro

This one’s for those who are meticulous about the condition of their skin, but don’t always have time for regular facials. It’s a personal microdermabrasion device by PMD Beauty that removes dead skins cells, age spots (Yay for getting older!), and more – in the comfort of home. Her skin will look healthier immediately, plus it helps serums and creams penetrate up to 20x deeper. PMDbeauty.com

unnamedFinishing Touch Flawless

This little number is beyond convenient – and totally cost effective! The Finishing Touch Flawless puts the power of hair-removal in her hands. It’s battery operated and about the size of a small tube of toothpaste, so she can keep it with her for on-the-go touchups… like those random chin hairs that can appear out of nowhere. (Again, yay!) Super simple. Super cute rose gold design. FinishingTouchFlawless.com or Ulta stores

Screen Shot 2017-12-10 at 6.37.03 PMGHD Deluxe Dry & Style Nocturne Gift Set

GHD has a variety of holiday sets this year – all sure shots for the girl who loves styling her hair. I’ve always known the brand for their straighteners, but it was their ionic tech-infused hairdryer that caught my eye this year. Get a super-fast dry, while reducing those fussy crown flyaways. The ghd Air Hairdryer is sold on its own, but there’s a Deluxe Dry & Style Nocturne Gift Set that includes it and their 1” styler with heat-resistant pad. Bonus: It’s now $50 off! GHDhair.com

PERSONAL & HOME FRAGRANCES

Fragrance.com

Most people appreciate getting perfumes and cologne for the holidays, but they aren’t always easy to give. Fragrance is such a personal thing that you almost need to know exactly which one s/he wants.

If you do (or are willing to guess), fragrance.com has some of the best prices I’ve seen on new and coveted scents. Look for coupon pricing on lush florals like Diptyque Geranium Odorata and Prada Candy Florale, or a popular unisex scent like Creed Royal Oud. I guarantee you’ll be pleasantly surprised! fragrance.com

Sephora

Specialty travel-sized and rollerball perfumes make great gifts and stocking stuffers. I love that Sephora has a special section in their stores dedicated to these on-the-go fragrance options. Pick up her favorite Stella McCartney scent in a rollerball, or opt for an entire curated Perfume Wardrobe from Atelier Cologne. Sephora.com

Champagne Everyday! The scent of champagne is almost as satisfying as the taste of it. Here are three of my favorites to add even more warmth to her/your home this season…

LAFCO ChampagneChampagne 3-wick candle

Also known as Penthouse, this intoxicating blend of ginger, sparkling grapefruit and Tuscan lemon by LAFCO, gently introduces hints of rose, neroli, and raspberry to its surroundings.  lafco.com

Screen Shot 2017-12-17 at 8.51.33 AMChampagne Black Label Three-Wick Brass Candle

Antica Farmacista has designed this stunning champagne candle in a gift-perfect black, crocodile-embossed hinged box that matches its brass jar. I love a candle with a container that’s usable long after its final burn! This is the brand’s best-selling Champagne Black Label scent, also available in a chic black diffuser.  Nordstrom.com

Screen Shot 2017-12-17 at 8.43.00 AMMaison Blanc Crisp Champagne Home Ambiance Diffuser

The Maison Blanc Crisp Champagne diffuser makes a gorgeous hostess gift! The jar fits perfectly into any home aesthetic and its notes of sparkling brut champagne with hints of vanilla and barrel oak make every day feel celebratory. This Voluspa scent also comes in a candle if that’s your preference. Pick it up at Nordstrom.

NOTE: If you don’t have the time or finances to grab anything for anyone this season, just remember that a handwritten card, big smile & warm hug always go a long way.

Happy Holidays to all!

Mom’s Day 2017 Gift Guide

9 May

Showing up to Mother’s Day brunch without a gift is generally frowned upon. This Sunday, show Mom you’ve got her best interests in mind. From beauty to genes, here are a few gifts that won’t sit and gather dust on her shelf.

Makeup:

s1931385-main-LheroIf Mom hasn’t been introduced to BITE lip products yet, now’s the time. Each lipstick and pencil  is handcrafted from only natural and organic ingredients—like fruit butters and Manuka honey.

I love the BITE Multisticks for lips, cheeks, even dabbed onto eyelids. The limited-edition LOVE set makes a perfect gift – with 2 Multisticks (1 rosy taupe, 1 cool plum taupe), 1 sparkly Prismatic gloss, and 1 purse-sized mirror. Available now at Sephora.

Bodycare:melt-benefit_2

Another multitasker is Kopari’s Coconut Melt. Hair, tummy, face, heels – use it head to toe for ultimate soothing, 100% organic and unrefined coconut oil hydration. I also can’t get enough of their Coconut Body Milk. If Mom likes coconut oil, Kopari products are a must-have. Pull one of the gift sets or create one yourself at koparibeauty.com.

Skincare:tr_green_tea_spring_collection_set-643

I’ve never tried anything from Amore Pacific skincare that doesn’t feel absolutely nourishing and luxurious. If you aren’t familiar with these high performance products “powered by Asian botanicals” and Mom loves wonderful skincare, take a chance on this brand.

Go to a local Aritaum shop or Sephora and work with the consultant to pull products perfect for Mom’s skin type.

Hair Styling:Screen Shot 2017-05-09 at 1.54.15 AM

Give Mom a break from styling her hair on an upcoming occasion. There are so many Dry Bar locations now, one is bound to be near her. Admittedly, I use to question the necessity of these salons. But after one experience in the chair (and a smell of the Dry Bar products!!), I’ve changed my tune. There’s just something about not having to style your own hair.

Anyone else ever experienced a perspiring head from a hot hair dryer, causing your makeup to melt and the blow dry to take twice as long? #FirstWorldProblems, yes. But you are after all reading a beauty blog.

Go to your local Dry Bar or order a gift certificate online at thedrybar.com.

Jewelry:Screen Shot 2017-05-08 at 11.30.28 PM

Looking for less Beauty, and more Bauble? Helen Ficalora has the sweetest pieces. The charms can be purchased separately, and Mom necklaces can be individualized to your preference. Check out the pieces online, or the shop in Beverly Hills (461 N. Canon Drive) and show her just how much she shines.

Mom Testing:

kit-mothers-day.255fdc2c125fMom genes? Yes! We’ve all seen the commercials, but have you ever thought about what a perfect gift it might be for a relative? Consider giving Mom the gift of DNA genetic testing & analysis. Literally show her what she’s made of! You can even opt to add in information about her ancestry.

Order today and get $20 off at 23andme.com.

Happy Sunday to all. May none of us f*ck it up!
