Umberto: A Hair Institution

30 Jan

img_2861Hair salons go in and out all the time in Beverly Hills. But along the way, a few of them stick and become the holy grail of hairstyling. Umberto is one such salon, and the man behind it has become an icon in his industry.

I went in yesterday for a simple blogger blowout. Speaking freely, I always appreciate the little perks of being a beauty writer but a blowout is a blowout. Not that I take it for granted. Sign me up!

But this was on a whole ‘nother level.

I hadn’t been inside the Canon Drive salon in at least 10+ years. My hair doesn’t have much style. It’s always been baby fine, not really straight, not really curly, no bangs. It styles easily enough, but stays perfect for about 5 minutes. It moves from middle part to top knot on an hourly basis. It’s basically lazy. It likes to go to the party, but is ready to go after one round. I guess it’s on the right head.

Anywayyy. Apologies for all that dribble. The point being, my hair has been in the same non-style for about 30 years. I get it trimmed twice a year (if that) but rarely expose it to a luxe cut because… well it just isn’t worth the time and money. Color is a different story. I don’t mess around with a questionable colorist!

The people at Umberto greeted me like I was family. Such a happy vibe in this bright, airy salon. No uppity attitude. No staring at the messy nest that was my bun. Have ya seen Trolls? Nothing but people chatting and laughing and styling and coloring, all in a common hair love affair.

At the helm of the salon is Umberto Savone – the charismatic owner, respected stylist, img_2859and all-around revered entrepreneur. When they say a company’s culture starts from the top, it’s so true.

As the assistants got me settled in, I apologized for my long stringy hair and was assuring them my blowout would be easy… when Umberto himself walked up and introduced himself.

The consummate stylist, he took a quick tour of my hair. When I said I was only there for a blowout, he wasn’t having it. Umberto grabbed his scissors and went to town on my messy locks. He cut my hair while dry, with all the rhythm and smooth precision of a Bruno Mars mix.

Soon I was whisked over to the shampoo bowls, and then back for a blowout. His team used the Umberto Volumizing products (Thickening Spray and Lifting Powder) to give my hair extra body and weight. I highly recommend checking out the entire product collection – available at his salons or Target. Super reasonable prices!

What many people don’t know is that Umberto has a beautiful salon a few miles south, on Olympic Blvd. It’s not as grand as the original salon, but neither are the prices. You can book a cut, color, manicure, and more. Many of the Canon Dr. assistants work at the Olympic salon on their days off to build up their clientele. This salon is a fabulous option for those who are watching their wallets.

Though you’ll find Umberto primarily at the Canon location, both salons are full-service and will even offer you a smoothie or sandwhich. I walked away with a fresh new cut, sweet products, a smile on my face, AND my favorite chopped salad packed to-go from Porta Via next door.

It’s encouraging to know that some Beverly Hills beauty institutions still live up to their reputations after all these years.

Under-the-radar salons: Great without Glitz

31 May

Not all hair salons in Los Angeles are stops on the TMZ tour. Our salons run the gamut of champagne-offered blowouts to we-cut-you-blow-&-go shops. Typically I prefer shops that fall somewhere in between. Not too much frill, but enough individual attention where it doesn’t feel like I’m part of an assembly line.

And if I’m being honest, I guess I do like to be offered a cappuccino. Who doesn’t?

So these suggestions that I’ve recently discovered aren’t exactly Fantastic Sam’s, but there’s also no pressure to get dressed up for your appointment either.

SALON KAZUMI

I remember Kazumi’s name when I used to get my brows done at Gavert Atelier. People have been raving about her color technique forever. She’s known for making magic with brunettes. Kazumi’s energy and Japanese roots (pun a little intended) spill over into her new namesake salon in Beverly Hills.

Salon Kazumi is clean, bright, unassuming, and on the outskirts of BH’s triangle – so all the noise is easily kazumiavoidable and parking is simple. Plus I found myself zenly (it’s a word now.) fixated on her gorgeous light fixtures during most of my appointment. Sorry about that, Michael.

Speaking of, Michael managed the perfect blend of Ask and Suggest. He readily admitted cutting wasn’t his specialty and that color was, so we focused on what would work best for my fine, flat strands.

BTW, I know I’ve said this before, but it’s true: Go to a colorist and a stylist, not one-in-the-same. Kinda like the Chinese delivery place that also serves pizza. They might offer both, but neither will be great.

Michael made me the perfect natural I was looking for. He left my natural base alone and brightened up my highlights – allowing the perfect amount of grow out maintenance for someone who rarely gets to the salon.

REBECCA FITZGERALD MD INC.

If you don’t want to deal with the whole Beverly Hills crowds, check out this quaint practice on Larchmont. It’s north of the shopping block and parking is a breeze.

My aesthetician was Bekah Parga. She gave me a SilkPeel Diamond Dermalinfusion. It’s supposed to be poFitzgeraldpular with celebs who want to get glowing skin, pre-red carpet. Bekah was great at explaining what she was doing as she went along. She knew her stuff and didn’t try to push anything on me. First some microdermabrasion, then some hydrating via Lumixyl peptides, etc. Bekah showed me afterward what was taken off my skin. It ends up in this little cylinder. Really it just looked like diluted salt water to me, but she said sometimes you see little black heads floating around! Gross…and yet cool! I imagine I’d feel something in between embarrassed and triumphant.

 SATIN SOLES

Whether you want a standard pedicure or a gel manicure, this salon will take care of you. They’ll even do a massage or wax. Satin Soles isn’t frilly, but it’s spacious and airy. And you’ll probably have a celeb sighting when you’re there.

They’ve got a big assortment of new polishes (mostly OPI and Essie) and are more than happy to mix up colors if you can’t find a perfect shade. The only downsides are parking on 3rd Street and that they’re cash only. I rarely have cash on me, but at least they’ve got an ATM onsite. Plus Carmela is next door for an ice cream stop once you’re dry.

Gina Mari Skincare – Beverly Hills

21 Sep

Sometimes a visit to the esthetician can feel like an hour of boot camp. You get poked and scrutinized and lectured—and sometimes it’s exactly the kick you need. Sometimes.

Visiting Gina Mari Skincare isn’t like that. It’s like going to good friend’s house, where you are welcomed and accepted. A friend who happens to have the coolest machines ever! And you never want to leave.

Sure Gina and the girls will tell you what’s up. They’ll tell you what could be beneficial to your unique complexion, and what’s not worth your investment. They’ll even pay closer attention to some melasma-looking thing that your dermatologist blew off.

WHAT TO ASK FOR

Right now — just in time for the Emmys and approaching holiday season, clients are booking Gina’s most advanced body treatment to date: the Birthday Suit.

It’s a 5-step non-invasive fully body procedure that she says will help reduce sunspots, dimpled and dehydrated skin – thanks to some cutting edge technology. Ninety minutes later, your skin is left glowing and refreshed.

I’m gonna say this one is best for the 30 and above crowd. Here’s a brief breakdown of the Birthday Suit treatment:

STEP 1: Full Body Microdermabrasion – Dry & Wet

This works on all the environmental effects of LA-living on our skin. Think: pollution, ultraviolet sun rays, airborne bacteria, et al. Microdermabrasion will exfoliate dead skin cells and stimulate new cell turnover.

STEP 2: Exfoliation & Brightening

A light acid wash is applied to fully remove the dead skin cells, followed by Shea butter to leave a brightening effect. Multiple skin irritations, such as psoriasis, eczema and sunburn can be improved in this step.

STEP 3: TriPollar

Here’s where they take the party up a notch. Tripollar delivers radio frequency through 3 or more electrodes to drastically improve the skin’s surface and subcutaneous fat layers.

STEP 4: Z-Wave Pro

Z-Wave Pro further addresses signs of aging, like stubborn fat pockets, with a sound wave technology. Radial shock waves are used to encourage a tightening in the body’s general connective tissues. Now I don’t fully understand how this works…but after watching the Emmy red carpet, I’d be down to learn.

STEP 5: LED Light Therapy (full body)

Step 5 is based on NASA research that has found certain light frequencies increase new tissue growth and stimulate collagen production. Basically, light energy improves cell energy.
