10 Things I Know

17 Sep

Beauty bloggers are often asked about our favorite products, tips & tricks. Makes sense. We get a lot of intel. But truth be told, a product has to be really great in order to stand out amongst the slew of competition. Especially skincare. No matter what it says on the box or in the commercial, you don’t generally see results (if you see them at all) until at least a month of consistent use. Which is where the blogger issue can come into play. When testing out so many formulas, it’s rare we have flexibility to use only one product at a time, as directed. Keep this in mind when reading beauty blog reviews.

Makeup, fragrance, hair tools, and bath products are a whole different ball game. One and done. You can tell in seconds if they’re a keeper.

So having stated all of the above, I do have some beauty product-related knowledge. Whatever isn’t news to you, just chalk up as a reminder. Here are 11 things I know for sure…

  1. Lips will never look better chapped. Dry lips don’t look healthy. Grab a natural lip scrub, leave it on for 5 minutes. Massage in circles before rinsing off. Then follow it up with a rich lip balm or treatment. I love the Whipped Cherry Fruit Scrub and Agave Lip Mask from BITE Beauty.

Screen Shot 2018-09-16 at 3.53.22 PMIf you really are anti-scrub, try this: Smile with your lips together, then place tape over them. Smooth the tape over your lips for a minute or so. Then rip it off. Once you see what’s on the tape, you might want to grab that scrub!

2. Before you hop on the lip filler bandwagon, try a plumping gloss. I’m partial to Buxom’s Full-On Plumping Polish or Cream but almost every brand makes one now. The good ones really work and make your lips fuller and smoother with continued use. If you’re looking to rectify lip lines, hold off on injections until you try products like Dr. Macrene’s 37 Actives High Performance Anti-Aging and Filler Lip Treatment, Embryolisse’s Re-Densifying Eye & Lip Contour Cream, or Meaningful Beauty’s Remodeling Lip Serum.

Screen Shot 2018-09-16 at 4.16.02 PM3. If you want to combat under eye puffiness, stick to serum. Creams can work for dark circles, but if you really want to dilute those bags, you only stand a chance with a serum like SkinMedica’s Uplifting Eye Serum or the Ferulic + Retinol Triple Correction Eye Serum by Dr. Dennis Gross. Ice cubes don’t hurt either.

4. Also for those battling eye puffiness (as I clearly am) or discoloration, I’ve tried all the methods of concealer. Hands down, the upside down triangle trick works best. Message me or google it if you aren’t familiar, but it basically consists of using your concealer to draw an upside down triangle beneath your eye – filling it in, then blending it into your skin and additional face make as needed. Trust me, it works far better than the other hacks you’ll hear about. New must-try fave: Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Away Concealer!

5. Floss. Just do it. I never used to. But in an age of kale, seaweed salad, and celery sandwiches – using dental floss is necessary. I always feel a sense of accomplishment getting that celery string out, too. It’s the little things in life… amiright?

6. For any of us who over-plucked in the 90s or weren’t blessed with long luscious lashes, there are products out there that work. You can definitely grow longer eyelashes and fuller eyebrows with OTC products. GradeLash is really popular lately, but NeuBrow and NeuLash have consistently worked wonders for both my lashes and sparse brow zones.

Screen Shot 2018-09-16 at 8.18.51 PM7. Matte works better on youth. It just does. Matte lipstick. Matte foundation. Matte powder. All of it. As much as I’d love to pull off a deep red matte lip, it just makes me look older than I am. Same with face makeup. If you must go with a matte foundation, try adding a dewy highlighter or pearly sheen to your cheekbones. And on that note, glitter is generally for youth, too. If you want some sparkle, go for a finely milled shimmer, pearlized or holographic sheen. Think Hourglass vs. Stila.

8. Play with primers. They make a difference. I love Urban Decay eye primers. As for foundation primers, try one from your favorite brand of foundation. Let it set for a minute or two before applying makeup. Your lids and face will become a much smoother canvas. They also help keep makeup on longer.

Screen Shot 2018-09-16 at 9.43.55 PM9. You know you need to wear SPF (natural is better) and to wash your face every night. Skincare 101. And I won’t bore you with my favorite cleansers or makeup removers. But I will say that Micellar waters are effective. I’m always surprised how much makeup didn’t come off from washing alone. After you wash and pat dry your face, saturate a cotton round with Micellar water (I like IT Cosmetics Miracle Water 3-in-1 Tonic) and swipe it over your skin. You’ll see what washing left behind.

10. Do you still get those awful cystic chin pimples? I do. And my instinct has always been to douse them in hot water or hit a steam room when I can. Wrong. Turns out heat only exacerbates already-irritated skin. Leave the pimple alone. Do not try to pop it. If you absolutely have to do something, dab it with cool water or a covered ice cube to help decrease swelling.

Well those are my top 10. Let me know if they helped at all. Or if you have any specific questions, send ’em my way. Maybe I know more than 10 things. ; )

CityWalk Appeals to Beauty Shoppers

Nectar Bath Treats | Razzle Dazzle Donut Soap

Last I visited Universal CityWalk, it was all food and tourist shops. Which makes perfect sense for the locale. That said, I was presently surprised when I popped by this week to discover some new beauty-tailers.

First, there’s the mother ship: Sephora moved in! And it’s a good one. Many coveted collections line the walls. Picture brand new, untouched rows of BITE lipsticks, Pat McGrath palettes, Huda, Anastasia & Dior glosses, Tatcha eye brighteners, MILK sticks, Kate Somerville serums, and more. Heaven for an unapologetic product lover like myself. Stop by!

Then I discovered what can only be described as the love child of LUSH and Sprinkles. It’s a natural body shop called Nectar Bath Treats—just diagonal from Sephora. Wall to wall popsicle soaps, milkshake soaks, and handmade fruit smoothie scrubs. For bath lovers, it’s a dizzying experience. Crumbly Ice cream soaps, fizzy bath bombs, and macaron bathing treats. A one-stop gift shop—perfect (and safe!) for kids, too.

There’s even a make-your-own fragrance bar. I opted for a blend of vanilla and sugar body butter. Because when in Rome.

Now that I think about it… these locations are genius. By the time you leave Nectar, you want to get your hands on a treat you can actually eat. And whatdya know…there’s are about 6 candy stores within a stone’s throw. Brilliant!

Mom’s Day 2017 Gift Guide

9 May

Showing up to Mother’s Day brunch without a gift is generally frowned upon. This Sunday, show Mom you’ve got her best interests in mind. From beauty to genes, here are a few gifts that won’t sit and gather dust on her shelf.

Makeup:

s1931385-main-LheroIf Mom hasn’t been introduced to BITE lip products yet, now’s the time. Each lipstick and pencil  is handcrafted from only natural and organic ingredients—like fruit butters and Manuka honey.

I love the BITE Multisticks for lips, cheeks, even dabbed onto eyelids. The limited-edition LOVE set makes a perfect gift – with 2 Multisticks (1 rosy taupe, 1 cool plum taupe), 1 sparkly Prismatic gloss, and 1 purse-sized mirror. Available now at Sephora.

Bodycare:melt-benefit_2

Another multitasker is Kopari’s Coconut Melt. Hair, tummy, face, heels – use it head to toe for ultimate soothing, 100% organic and unrefined coconut oil hydration. I also can’t get enough of their Coconut Body Milk. If Mom likes coconut oil, Kopari products are a must-have. Pull one of the gift sets or create one yourself at koparibeauty.com.

Skincare:tr_green_tea_spring_collection_set-643

I’ve never tried anything from Amore Pacific skincare that doesn’t feel absolutely nourishing and luxurious. If you aren’t familiar with these high performance products “powered by Asian botanicals” and Mom loves wonderful skincare, take a chance on this brand.

Go to a local Aritaum shop or Sephora and work with the consultant to pull products perfect for Mom’s skin type.

Hair Styling:Screen Shot 2017-05-09 at 1.54.15 AM

Give Mom a break from styling her hair on an upcoming occasion. There are so many Dry Bar locations now, one is bound to be near her. Admittedly, I use to question the necessity of these salons. But after one experience in the chair (and a smell of the Dry Bar products!!), I’ve changed my tune. There’s just something about not having to style your own hair.

Anyone else ever experienced a perspiring head from a hot hair dryer, causing your makeup to melt and the blow dry to take twice as long? #FirstWorldProblems, yes. But you are after all reading a beauty blog.

Go to your local Dry Bar or order a gift certificate online at thedrybar.com.

Jewelry:Screen Shot 2017-05-08 at 11.30.28 PM

Looking for less Beauty, and more Bauble? Helen Ficalora has the sweetest pieces. The charms can be purchased separately, and Mom necklaces can be individualized to your preference. Check out the pieces online, or the shop in Beverly Hills (461 N. Canon Drive) and show her just how much she shines.

Mom Testing:

kit-mothers-day.255fdc2c125fMom genes? Yes! We’ve all seen the commercials, but have you ever thought about what a perfect gift it might be for a relative? Consider giving Mom the gift of DNA genetic testing & analysis. Literally show her what she’s made of! You can even opt to add in information about her ancestry.

Order today and get $20 off at 23andme.com.

Happy Sunday to all. May none of us f*ck it up!

National Lipstick Day (really!)

29 Jul

GS---BANG

Today is “National Lipstick Day.” At least that’s what the web and PR mavens tell me. So who am I to argue.

In honor of said holiday, I’ll share a few fun facts about the beloved product.

First off, it’s been said that the beauty industry remains afloat during a recession or when others are in turmoil because a woman can purchase one lipstick and feel like she’s had a makeover. Instant “feel better” status. I believe this.

Here’s a few you may not have heard…

  • At one point (1650 to be specific), some governments such as the British Parliament attempted to ban lipstick from being worn. WTF?
  • Wearing red lipstick early in the Greek empire signified a woman was a prostitute. It’s still a popular shade in the field, I hear.
  • Rumor has it, Elizabeth Taylor once banned all other women from wearing red lipstick on her film set. Actually, I’ve heard of way worse diva demands and dressing room riders.

Annnnd here are a few lipsticks worth trying if you haven’t yet.

RODIAL GLAMSTICK SPF15, Bang

Love this brand. Love this balm. It delivers gorgeous sheer color with SPF, is enriched with Vitamin E & Cocoa Butter, and has a light coconut scent.

BITE BEAUTY LUMINOUS CRÈME LIPSTICK, Fiano

This particular color is a distinctive lush nude. This is also my new favorite lip brand. In fact, it’s made with only food-grade ingredients and so free of all the bad stuff that it’s actually healthy enough to eat! Just in case you’re going on Naked & Afraid…you could bring this dual-purpose product as your “one” survival item.

TYRA BEAUTY LIP MODEL, Hater Blocker

Leave it to Tyra Banks to make a sparkly red and gold shade that’s a universal head-turner on everyone!

Happy Lipstick Day to all!

STICK IT!

4 Feb

February is a big mouth month around Los Angeles.

Flashing smiles for cameras on Awards Show red carpets, puckering up on Valentine’s Day, or best case scenario – giving an acceptance speech… Our mouths tend to be a big focus this time of year.

With everything to stay on top of in our daily lives, most of us don’t spend time worrying about having camera-ready lips. So what do women say in the City of Angels? We say, “STICK IT!”

Instead of grabbing our favorite go-to gloss for long evenings when our puckers need to last, Angelenos are relying on chunky color sticks. Formulas range from totally matte to satiny sheens—All are long-wearing, draw seamlessly onto lips, and are evening clutch-friendly.

OUR TOP 3 PICKS:

NARS Velvet Lip Pencils

NARS

Available in matte or gloss formulas, NARS Velvet Lip Pencils are a godsend, day or night. Some have shimmer, others give a natural wash of color. All have vitamin E, hyaluronic spheres, and a smooth buttery texture.

Suggested shade: Cythère, a soft metallic rose beige

BITE High Pigment Matte Lip Pencil

BITE

The BITE formula delivers a modern matte look. Gorgeous with a shimmering or smoky eye. Plus it’s packed with resveratrol for long-term anti-aging benefits. And the pencils are made exclusively with nurturing food-grade ingredients, said to be healthy enough to eat.

Suggested shade: Chablis, a soft coral rose

TARTE LipSurgence Skintuitive Lip Tint in Energy

TARTE

Love this limited-edition tint! A shade of pink that’s natural, sheer, and different on every woman. The formula works with skin’s natural pH, giving lips a vitamin-rich, plumped, personalized pink. Plus, it’s got a natural minty taste – so kiss with confidence!

ALL OF THE ABOVE ARE AVAILABLE AT YOUR LOCAL SEPHORA AND SEPHORA.COM.
