Holiday Gift Guide | No. 3

17 Dec

Now that we’re in the thick of the holidays, I present you with my third Holiday Gift Guide – and very last one for 2017. What follows is a list of gift ideas that work best for those you know well. I’ve sprinkled a few fragrance suggestions that can also serve as hostess gifts… but for the most part, these aren’t for your favorite FedEx carrier.

BEAUTY TOOLS

This one’s for those who are meticulous about the condition of their skin, but don’t always have time for regular facials. It’s a personal microdermabrasion device by PMD Beauty that removes dead skins cells, age spots (Yay for getting older!), and more – in the comfort of home. Her skin will look healthier immediately, plus it helps serums and creams penetrate up to 20x deeper. PMDbeauty.com

unnamedFinishing Touch Flawless

This little number is beyond convenient – and totally cost effective! The Finishing Touch Flawless puts the power of hair-removal in her hands. It’s battery operated and about the size of a small tube of toothpaste, so she can keep it with her for on-the-go touchups… like those random chin hairs that can appear out of nowhere. (Again, yay!) Super simple. Super cute rose gold design. FinishingTouchFlawless.com or Ulta stores

GHD has a variety of holiday sets this year – all sure shots for the girl who loves styling her hair. I’ve always known the brand for their straighteners, but it was their ionic tech-infused hairdryer that caught my eye this year. Get a super-fast dry, while reducing those fussy crown flyaways. The ghd Air Hairdryer is sold on its own, but there’s a Deluxe Dry & Style Nocturne Gift Set that includes it and their 1” styler with heat-resistant pad. Bonus: It’s now $50 off! GHDhair.com

PERSONAL & HOME FRAGRANCES

Fragrance.com

Most people appreciate getting perfumes and cologne for the holidays, but they aren’t always easy to give. Fragrance is such a personal thing that you almost need to know exactly which one s/he wants.

If you do (or are willing to guess), fragrance.com has some of the best prices I’ve seen on new and coveted scents. Look for coupon pricing on lush florals like Diptyque Geranium Odorata and Prada Candy Florale, or a popular unisex scent like Creed Royal Oud. I guarantee you’ll be pleasantly surprised! fragrance.com

Sephora

Specialty travel-sized and rollerball perfumes make great gifts and stocking stuffers. I love that Sephora has a special section in their stores dedicated to these on-the-go fragrance options. Pick up her favorite Stella McCartney scent in a rollerball, or opt for an entire curated Perfume Wardrobe from Atelier Cologne. Sephora.com

Champagne Everyday! The scent of champagne is almost as satisfying as the taste of it. Here are three of my favorites to add even more warmth to her/your home this season…

LAFCO ChampagneChampagne 3-wick candle

Also known as Penthouse, this intoxicating blend of ginger, sparkling grapefruit and Tuscan lemon by LAFCO, gently introduces hints of rose, neroli, and raspberry to its surroundings.  lafco.com

Antica Farmacista has designed this stunning champagne candle in a gift-perfect black, crocodile-embossed hinged box that matches its brass jar. I love a candle with a container that’s usable long after its final burn! This is the brand’s best-selling Champagne Black Label scent, also available in a chic black diffuser.  Nordstrom.com

Screen Shot 2017-12-17 at 8.43.00 AMMaison Blanc Crisp Champagne Home Ambiance Diffuser

The Maison Blanc Crisp Champagne diffuser makes a gorgeous hostess gift! The jar fits perfectly into any home aesthetic and its notes of sparkling brut champagne with hints of vanilla and barrel oak make every day feel celebratory. This Voluspa scent also comes in a candle if that’s your preference. Pick it up at Nordstrom.

NOTE: If you don’t have the time or finances to grab anything for anyone this season, just remember that a handwritten card, big smile & warm hug always go a long way.

Happy Holidays to all!

Met Gala Beauty: Emma Roberts

2 May

"Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art Of The In-Between" Costume Institute Gala - ArrivalsLast night was what many of us refer to as the Fashion Event of the Year in NYC: The Met Gala. This year’s Costume Institute theme was “Rei Kawakubo/ Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.”

Red was fittingly a big trend of the evening, but my favorite was Emma Roberts.

Emma stunned in classic Hollywood glam. Her lollipop red satin Diane von Furstenberg gown stood out with a sleek corset bodice, peek-a-boo lace, and hot pink fur boa. While her hair hung long with an “un-styled” style, her makeup was a mix of vibrant and smoky color.

Makeup artist (and the woman behind her namesake brand) Charlotte Tilbury described Emma’s Met Ball look as, “a dreamy, lit-from-within glow on flawless, pore-less contoured skin, soft, rose-gold metallics on the eyes to make them look bigger and brighter, and sumptuous, fuller, wider Pillow Talk supermodel natural lips.”

Below are some of the key steps and CT products Charlotte used to create Emma’s look:

Got Eye Baggage?

7 Mar

IMG_3496

Soon after turning 40 (gulp.), I started waking up with lovely not-so-little bags under my eyes. No discoloration really, but visibly puffy lids and under eye bags. Whether they’re hereditary (possibly) or a lack of hydration (also possible), I keep trying to get rid of them. As one would.

The bags improve throughout the day, but I still notice the little f**kers.

Last week, I met Dr. Dennis Gross at an event for QVC Beauty in Los Angeles. He taught me that creams don’t get rid of eye puffiness, but serums can. It’s all about serums, Vitamin C and retinols. Got it. I’ll go into those products further in another blog – as well as Dr. Gross’ awesome anti-aging peel pads!

FullSizeRenderBut while I search for an effective eye serum, I have found a temporary solution. The Peter Thomas Roth Instant Firm X Eye gel is no joke! It really does make a difference when used on fine lines and puffiness.

The unfiltered photos I’ve posted above show my eyes before applying the Peter Thomas Roth gel, and then 7 minutes later, post-application (below). I see a difference, do you?

All you do is shake the tube, squeeze a drop on your hand, then use the angled brush to apply a thin layer where needed. Try to keep your face relaxed and expressionless while the gel sets for 5-7 minutes. Wipe away any excess product after it dries. Use it alone or under makeup.

For those who have issues with under eye discoloration and darker circles, creams help – and there are more makeup tricks. But make sure you aren’t just settling for a concealer. You want to neutralize discoloration with a color-correcting product first. Then apply your concealer, foundation or powder after.

Here’s a breakdown of what colors work best to correct certain under eye issues.

  • Green: Neutralizes dark circles that have a red tint
  • Pink: Tones down blue or purple-hued circles
  • Purple: Covers up yellow spots
  • Yellow: Instantly brightens dark pigmentation

Trying to fix under eye circles and discoloration? Use the suggested color-correcting fixes and check out these affordable options pictured above.

NARS Oscar Beauties

27 Feb

I told my nieces that the main takeaway from La La Land is that a girl’s biggest inspiration always comes from her aunt. At only 8 and 10, I could see the doubt in their eyes.

But when I said that Emma Stone has looked like perfection on every red carpet this season, they both agreed with great big smiles. And Emma didn’t disappoint last night either.

In a shimmering 1920s inspired gold Givenchy Haute Couture gown (and subtle Planned Parenthood pin!), Emma’s Oscar-winning look was flawless.

Though no matter what she wears, it’s her attitude, honesty, and famously expressive green eyes that always seem to light up the lens.

And no one knows Emma’s eyes better than Rachel Goodwin. As her longtime makeup artist, Goodwin is the talent behind every one of Emma’s gorgeous beauty looks.

“Emma’s [Oscar] look was all about [old] Hollywood Glamour – her makeup was inspired by the romantic paintings by Dante Gabriel Rossetti.”

Key NARS products Goodwin used:

Goodwin also did the makeup for last year’s Best Actress winner Brie Larson. Note to Next Year’s Nominees: Consider getting Rachel Goodwin on your beauty team!

For this year’s Oscars, “My inspiration for Brie’s makeup look was the strong, vibrant and empowered women that were often featured in Helmut Newton’s photography.”

Key NARS products Goodwin used:

Personally, I didn’t care much for Scarlett Johansson’s Alaïa gown or buzzed hair. That said, her face looked fresh and pretty. And since Scarlett’s makeup artist Frankie Boyd used NARS, I’ll go ahead and include her key products here:

Lastly, in keeping with my NARS theme…

The brand’s International Lead Makeup Stylist Uzo used NARS products on Ava DuVernay’s beautiful face.

“I wanted to emphasize [the] warmth in her complexion while keeping the makeup simple with a classic smoky eye, and lips and cheeks in muted shades of plum and rose.”

Key products Uzo used:

NARS Cosmetics are available at narscosmetics.com, Sephora, and other fine retailers.

All those stunning faces and creative spirits aside, that was an Academy Awards broadcast  like most of us have never seen. In the end, I think the right awards wound up in the right hands. But what’s a Hollywood evening without some big time drama?

So bring on the rebels, the ripples from pebbles, the painters, and poets, and plays. And here’s to the fools who dream. Crazy as they may seem. Here’s to the hearts that break. Here’s to the mess we make.

On-the-Go Extensions

21 Feb

(L) Hair after hiking; (R) With Dark Blonde Secret Extensions

Up until my 20s I got natural blonde highlights from the sun. But as I’ve gotten older and started paying attention to every freckle, sunblock and hats have become a regular thing. Goodbye natural blonde halo.

Now my hair is bronde – or as Mom used to call it, “Mousy Brown. If I have any highlights, they’re usually paid for. Up until a few weeks ago, my hair has always been a few inches below my shoulders. When it gets any longer, it gets stringy.

Mom has wanted me to get extensions for decades. Meh. I’ve got other things to spend a paycheck on. But when Secret Extensions reached out, I decided I had nothing to lose.

Plus I like the idea of not having to clip hair in. The idea of exposed clips or seams has always made me anxious. Secret Extensions are worn like an adjustable headband. They can be taken on and off in seconds. You just slip them on over your head and pull your natural hair out over the thin band. Instant on-the-go length and volume!

I wore the extensions out a few times and no one noticed anything, which was good. I loved the added volume and color gradient – but the length (16”) and curled ends honestly felt a bit too Disney Princess. If I wear them again, I will attempt cutting the length first.

Actress and company spokeswoman Daisy Fuentes says you can cut, style, or wash these just as you would your own hair. There are 11 shades to pick from, and they’re really affordable compared to professional applications.

The Secret Extensions are also perfect for trying out highlights, low lights, or even ombre and balayage looks – before committing to permanent color. I test drove Dark Blonde and Light Brown (swatched above).

See all the different fun colors at secretextensions.com.
