Father’s Day Grooming Gifts

13 Jun

There are more options than ever to find good skincare for men. In Los Angeles, we even have grooming bars and salons sprinkled throughout the city. As Dad’s Day is coming up this weekend, these are some of the coolest brands for protecting and preserving male complexions.

image006Kiehl’s has always offered skincare for men, but they’ve recently evolved the line to include 6 new Grooming Solutions products for every unique facial need. Beards included! Shop online HERE to choose which products will work best for Dad.

NOTE TO ANGELENOS: Next Thursday, June 22nd, Kiehl’s will be opening in Westfield Century City. Customers will receive a complimentary full-sized Ultra Facial Cream with any purchase on opening day!

HESA10.jpgDid you know It’s a 10 haircare has a special collection for men called He’s a 10? Despite the odd brand name, I use their products on the regular. Great for de-frizzing and smoothing! I hear the Men’s Miracle Pliable Paste is great.

Get 15% off He’s a 10 products through June 21st with the code: fathersday. Check out the collection HERE.

For other cool ideas, InStyle created a great list of their favorite Men’s Subscription boxes. Read it HERE.

Valentine’s Day Gift Guide

9 Feb
clarins

Clarins

I wouldn’t presume to know what gift you should get your Valentine this year. Aside from some really good generic suggestions anyway.

But if you’re shopping for your friends or sisters …or basically anyone you aren’t sleeping with…I’ve got some not-s0-ordinary gift suggestions sure to make them smile.

ONE FOR ME, ONE FOR YOU

Clarins’ Daily Energizer Lovely Lip Balm creates a subtle flushed pink on everyone and smells like red currant. This nourishing balm is made with cocoa and shea butter, so it feels great on dry lips or under long-wear lipstick.

Clarins’ Skin Illusion Blush is purse-friendly and comes with a mirror, packed powder, and sponge all in one. It comes in three universal shades but I like Luminous Pink for a sweet blushing cheek.

Both the Clarins blush and balm come in exclusive Valentine’s Day packaging and are limited editions.

Milk+Sass

NOT SO KNOTTY

I like these macarons better than the real ones! These brand new Milk+Sass compact brushes are adorable – plus they take out every knot and tangle. Perfect right out of the shower on curly or straight hair, these detanglers fit snug in your palm and even have a built-in mirror.

Such a cute surprise gift for any friend who loves a functional accessoryand French pastry!

BRING A BOTTLEpink-pop_0-copy

No matter what the plan is, mini-sized bottles of bubbly make the night more fun. They’re also extra festive tied to a balloon… or packed with a pint of Choctál Madagascar Vanilla!

Try a sweet festive Stella Rosa (Stella Berry!) or delicious Pommery Champagne Pops Rose. Rosé all day, amiright?

LYFT HER UP

Don’t feel like driving on Valentine’s Day? Here’s one more reason to take Lyft. A select number of riders in Los Angeles will be offered a pretty greeting card from their driver, courtesy of Lovepop. I love these 3D popup cards. They’re based on the Asian art form Kirigami and are actually frame worthy…which isn’t an awful idea if you don’t plan on giving it to someone else.

The cards retail for $8 to $15 each, so make sure to thank your driver.

THE SYMBOL OF FRIENDSHIP

Show your best friend how much she means to you with a gift she can wear every day. The symbolic crossed arrows say that no matter what paths your lives take, yours were always destined to cross.

These hand stamped necklaces from The Silver Wren look perfect with the friendship symbol nestled between you and your bestie’s first initials.

GOLDEN GIRL

Lately I’ve been obsessing a bit over these gold chain earrings by Gabriela Artigas. The people at You’re So Baby in Echo Park are probably getting sick of seeing me swoon over them. I love how the delicate chain drapes down off of the mini 14kt staple.

Grab these luxe earrings for a truly deserving girl this Valentine’s Day – even if that girl is you!

Say Yes to Oils

25 Aug

SoaptopiaMost of us change up our look when summer comes around — be it wearing white, linen shirts, sandals, going a shade lighter on our highlights, etc. We wear more sunblock, bigger hats, bolder sunglasses. But what about fragrance? Do you mix it up?

I always switch up my fragrances from day to night. But come summer, I gravitate toward more citrus, light floral, and sea scents. I also opt for more of the roll-on vials, or replace perfume with body oil altogether.

If you have trouble with perfume lasting on hot summer days, I recommend trying body oils. Just slather them onto your damp skin right out of the shower. Look for blends made with almond oil to double as a skin softener.

Soaptopia are my go-to body oils this summer! Skip the perfume, skip the lotion. Just blend a few drops onto damp skin after the shower and you’re good to go. It’s much lighter than lotion so your skin won’t perspire and it doesn’t have the alcohol of perfume so its scent lingers longer. And because it’s an oil, your skin takes on a slight glow.

My favorite Soaptopia oil is Beauty & The Beach – a sweet orange, jasmine and vanilla scent that takes me from morning to cocktails!

Lucy B makes beautiful roll-on oils. They’re perfect for travel and come in memory-evoking scents. My favorite is the Wild Jasmine, a crisp, feminine floral-based scent.

Also look into the Lucy B Gold Frangipani shimmer oil. Love this beachy coconut and argan oil scent (also avail in a non-shimmery roll-on oil!) for summer. It’s a sweet blend of tropical fruit and floral. Dab it on shoulders, décolleté, or wherever you want a sun-kissed shimmer.

Another portable roll-on fragrance worth checking out is by Jouer Cosmetics. I don’t think it has a name? They use a Jojoba Oil, which helps the scent wear really well. If you aren’t into florals, you may want to pass this one up though, since it’s all about the blend of gardenia, jasmine and honeysuckle. Needless to say, I personally love it.

If you’re a spa goer, you’re familiar with Burke Williams. What you may not know is that they’ve added Ayurvedic body treatments to their menu. So since we’re on the subject of oils, it seems apropos to mention their new treatments using “aromatherapeutic” essential oils to help deliver mental relaxation, restoration, and an overall sense of contentment.

The spa chain has partnered with Shankara to provide some of the purest Ayurvedic aromatherapeutic oils in the world. All are made in India, and are 100% organic, paraben, alcohol and chemical free. And this is especially good information, since they’re gently heated and dripped all over you – from scalp to foot.

NOTE: This isn’t a massage, so don’t go in expecting that style of muscle kneading.

Your therapist uses your touch points and zones to create a flow of electromagnetic energy through your body. It’s takes longer than most treatments, too, which is nice. But in all that nourishing relaxation, it’s a challenge to not doze off – which for me always seems like a waste. (I can sleep at home for free!)

The experience should leave you healed and revitalized. Or at least on your way there.

While you’re at Burke Williams, ask about custom-made oils for massage. Certain locations, like Woodland Hills have an entire bar dedicated to them. I usually drive to Ojai for this!

Props to Scary Mommy

26 Jul

Screen Shot 2016-07-26 at 5.16.08 PM

It’s not always easy to be a girl. Especially one growing up in Los Angeles. 90210 episodes and films like Clueless (though a personal favorite of mine!) didn’t always paint the most universal picture.

When I was young, I always noticed my friends who maintained strong relationships with their mothers were the ones with the most confidence and strongest senses of self. To this day, I think this is true. It’s so important for girls to have a mentor or touchstone or just a consistent voice spewing positivity into her days.

Once I took a stab at writing what I wanted my nieces to know when they came into the world. It was basically a book of rhythmic babble, but it got my thoughts across at the time.

That said, I’ve recently come across what I consider one of the most modern, bad-assiest (it’s a word.) advice-style articles written. It’s from someone who refers to herself as Scary Mommy, funnily enough.

If you have any young girls in your life, I urge you to give it a read. Props, Scary Mommy!

BIG SUNDAY! Lemonade on Larchmont

13 May

ALSF-logo-square1It’s Big Sunday again, which means I’ll be supporting Alex’s Lemonade Stand with my peeps, as per the past few years. This year we’ll be parking our table on Larchmont Blvd. – in front of the former Pickett Fences and Crumbs locations.

  • Sunday, May 15th
  • 1:30 to 3:30ish
  • 214 N. Larchmont Blvd., LA 90004

Click HERE to learn more about Alex’s Lemonade Stand. 🙂

Come by if you’re in the ‘hood for some lemonade and a licorice straw. We are fancy like that. It’s also Farmer’s Market day on Larchmont, so you can make the rounds across the street for produce and flowers, too.

Not gonna be over that way? Buy a cup anywhere you see lemonade posts on Sunday – or any Sunday this month.  Big Sunday giveback efforts should be peeking around every corner, every Sunday, all month long.
