Gifts for Active LA Moms | No. 4

25 Apr

Love TulineThere’s no shortage of ideas for the active on-the-go mom in Los Angeles. But quantity doesn’t always mean quality. Wasn’t it her that taught you that?

I’ve recently become a fan of a beachy knitwear line called Love Tuline, created by Project Runway (Season 1) alum Nora Caliguri. The fabrics aren’t too heavy for spring weather, and mostly feature copy that weaves “LA” into the fun messaging.

My favorite is the navy hoody with thumbholes that says WANT TO SURF LATER? on the back. Even if Mom doesn’t surf today, this might be enough to inspire her to get out there one day. OR if she’s my mom, be so inclined to watch a good surf movie one day.

You can often find me toting my ROVE water bottle. I love the Insulated Travel Flask for my coffee at work. It keeps it hot for 6 hours! But the 22 oz. Tritan Flavor Infuser hydration bottles are insane. I just freeze berries and stick them in the center. Voila, my water is flavored to my personal liking.

ROVEBoth of these combine to make one sweet gift. And I can help get a lucky few of you get started! I’ve got 1 Love Tuline hoody and 2 ROVE water bottles to give away. All you need to do is share this article and tag #CityofGlossAngeles to be considered.

Three winners will be chosen at random and contacted on Wednesday. Ready, go!

Mom Gift Idea | No. 3

22 Apr

Fragrances come down to chemistry. What smells sweet and sultry on you might smell like mildew on someone else. So it makes it buying them for others kinda risky.

I know this. Obvi. But when you find a fragrance (or even a brand!) that just makes you happy whenever you wear it… well, let’s just say it gets a spot in the gift guide. ; )

Vanille AbricotI’ve been a longtime fan of French perfumer Comptoir Sud Pacifique. I usually go for a subtle vanilla or tropical floral, but recently I tried Vanille Abricot from their Eaux de Voyage Collection – and it quickly became one of my favorites.

It’s a warm blend of jackfruit, apricot and papaya pulp – heightened with a touch of vanilla and sugar candy. Don’t let the description sway you. This isn’t a fruity fragrance. It wears more like a light Parisian cotton candy.

If you’re going to risk buying Mom perfume, I highly recommend considering Vanille Abricot – or one of the many Comptoir Sud Pacifique scents. Order at Fragrancenet.com and join their mailing list to get 20% off!

Mom’s Day Gifts | No. 1

20 Apr

Let’s be honest. When it comes to certain holidays, it’s impossible to go overboard. Such is Mother’s Day, coming up on Sunday, May 10th. You can never overbuy for mom. So hit the web, mall and boutiques, and grab all the things she probably wouldn’t buy for herself.

Need some ideas? I’ll be posting random suggestions (mostly Beauty & Spa) over the next two weeks that Mom might enjoy—especially if she’s on the west coast. Don’t expect any restaurants though…I’ll leave those to the pros at Los Angeles Magazine and Our Man on the Ground.

Home fragrances can get a bad wrap because they don’t seem overly thoughtful. So wrong! Bring ’em on! There are so many gorgeous options out there so pick her up a candle or diffuser to complement the spring season.

Guide to Mom’s Day

3 May

May means blue skies and butterflies. It feels like summer is on its way – in Los Angeles at least. It also means Mother’s Day. So lock in your brunch rez, grab that gift, and get ready fobiter a day with Mom.

When it comes to giving gifts, I often opt for something Mom might not buy for herself. Here are a few fun ideas I’ve come across lately.

Deconstructed Rose Lip Gloss Library

By Bite Beauty

A library of 12 perfectly purse-sized, rose-colored glosses, ranging from soft pinks to deep reds. They come in a feminine blossom box and have light rosewater fragrances. Make sure she tries on every shade. Each one goes on sheer and can be layered for a denser shine of color. Sephora

Bloxsun Sun Glove

By Bloxsun

As an LA driver, I’m a huge fan of this product! Help Mom protect her hands from UV rays, photo aging, collagen breakdown, sunspots – and all that other fun stuff. Bloxsun Sun Gloves have the fingertips cut off for better mobility, are rated UPF 50+ (highest level of sun protection avail today!), and come in a sweet little pouch.

Get them HERE.

lancerLancer Dermatology

440 N. Rodeo Drive | BH, 90210

I haven’t tried anything from Dr. Harold Lancer’s skin care collection that hasn’t been used to the very last drop. I truly love his products – and his no-BS manner. His Rodeo Drive office is probably the poshest (it’s a word now) practice I’ve visited. If Mom is a skin fanatic and you can swing the bill for an appointment, go for it! Otherwise, hook her up with some of his products.

Suggestions: Any of the Nourish creams, skin Polishes, or Lancer Lash (it’s NEW!)

Erick Orellana

Sally Hershberger Los Angeles

760 North La Cienega Blvd. | LA, 90069

It’s likely that Mom has heard of Sally Hershberger. Best known for her choppy short cuts à la Meg Ryan, she’s got salons on both coasts, and is one of Hollywood’s most famous hair stylists. But Sally’s salon colorists and stylists are renowned in their own rights, as well.

Do Mom a special solid and book her an appointment for some new highlights with Erick Orellana. She’ll know she’s in good hands as soon as she hits the chair. Erick makes it his business (literally!) to be meticulous about hair color, and is known as an industry go-to guy for color correction.

You can even meet Mom after for some killer coffee around the corner at Alfred on Melrose Place… quite possibly my favorite street in Los Angeles.

Pure Treatment Oil

By SHOW Beauty

If Mom wouldn’t dare drift from her own stylist, treat her hair to real indulgence with SHOW Beauty’s Pure Treatment Oil. It’s a strengthening Argan Oil elixir that helps to enhance shine, elasticity, and overall hair health. Plus the bottle is so gorgeous, it can actually double as décor.

Pick up any of the SHOW Beauty products at Net-a-Porter.

Happy Mother’s Day, all!
